CASALE SONNINO
Monteporzio Catone, Rome, Italy
6 Bedrooms and 3 Bathrooms (Sleeps 10)

Casale Sonnino, a 17th - 18th century villa with parts dating back to 100 AD, is located below the hill town of Monte Porzio Catone, one of the Castelli Romani on the outskirts of Rome. This beautiful property is steeped in history and on its site 2,000 years ago, stood the villa of the Roman Senator, Julius Cornutus Tertullus. A cobblestone drive lined with cypress and olive trees leads to this lovely pale pink stucco villa that has 30 acres of vineyards, olive groves, and farmland, which produces much of the fruit and vegetables used in the villa's kitchen. Immediately surrounding the house are very pretty gardens and terraces and everywhere are colorful flowering potted plants and trees. There is also a charming grape arbor set with a table and chairs for dining al fresco. Beneath the Casale are ancient caves, which guests may visit accompanied by the farm manager. Here one will see the original Roman brick and stonework that supports the villa. For further exploration, stairs lead down to the maze of tunnels that winds below the house and vineyards.

The same family has owned Casale Sonnino since 1883 and every generation has taken great care to preserve the integrity and history of the house. Today, it's lovingly maintained by a Roman-born American lady, whose meticulous renovations have included all new bathrooms. Throughout the villa are lofty ceilings, original terrazzo floors and a comfortable mix of fine antiques and more contemporary furniture. There is also a rooftop terrace, which has spectacular views and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset over Rome.

Notes: Monte Porzio Catone is a charming hill town. The historic center has many excellent stores, including a supermarket, a fish market, several coffee bars, home-made pasta shops, several bread bakeries and a pastry shop. Not withstanding the small-town setting, these shops are on the level of those found in New York City for quality. There are also many very good restaurants in the immediate vicinity - often better than those in Rome (which usually feature standard tourist fare and are much more expensive). Nearby is Tusculum, a partially excavated Roman town with it's theater still intact, and Frascati (the largest town in the region and site of a fall wine festival). It has a magnificent 17th century Cathedral and several Renaissance princely villas including the Villas Tuscolana and Grazioli,(now 4-star hotels) and Villa Aldobrandini, which is still the residence of the Princes. Also in the vicinity of the Casale are clay tennis courts, golf, horseback riding, a children's playground and the Lake Albano at Castel Gandolfo (beaches). Guests have use of an attractive hotel pool nearby. Rates include utilities.
