THE DISTILLERY
Tortola, BVI
4 (+1) Bedrooms and 5.5 Bathrooms (Sleeps 9)
The Distillery is a sensational property, which brings Caribbean
living to another level. Historic 17th century stone ruins
of an indigo plantation and later a rum distillery create the focal
point of this magical residence set on 8.25 secluded acres of
tropical gardens, meadows and forests. Situated in quiet Greenbank,
The Distillery has glorious views of lovely Brewer’s Bay and is
within a 10 – 12 minute drive of Road Town, the capital. At about 800
ft above sea level, gentle trade winds and delightful weather all
year round make air conditioning unnecessary in this exotic paradise.
The estate’s Great House was designed in classic West Indian style
with hip roofs, louvered doors and windows and a broad wraparound
verandah with fretwork railings. Built on three levels with a bedroom
on the upper and lower floor, the main level comprises the Great Room
with its beautifully appointed living and dining spaces, 20’ ceilings
and collection of antiques from around the world. Large French doors
open to the verandah, spectacular views and to a wide stone staircase
to the garden level and large pool with a fountain. Beside it is a
pavilion with a wet bar and dining area. A walkway leads though the
lush garden full of papayas, ginger, soursop, hibiscus, petrea, palms
and other tropical greenery to the master bedroom cottage and to the
distillery ruins, which are set in a courtyard. Its artfully restored
main boiling room, with its four huge 200+ year old sugar coppers,
has been transformed into perhaps the most romantic al fresco dining
and entertaining space in the Caribbean. An adjacent former rum
barrel warehouse is now the old English “Pig’s Eye Pub” with an
Edwardian snooker table. An alley of mahogany trees leads to a tennis
court with a gazebo that also has fantastic views and to a delightful
and very private artist’s studio/guest house.
Every detail of this historical landmark was re-designed by the
owners to maximize luxury, comfort and total privacy while respecting
the plantation’s ancient heritage. The result is a unique compound
where one finds a marvelous and romantic combination of great style
and utter charm. The grounds and buildings are completely in tune
with nature and the result is a sublime sense of peace and
tranquility. The Distillery offers uncompromising taste, beauty,
serenity and breathtaking panoramas. With its excellent staff and
amenities, this superb retreat is like a private 5-star hotel.
